In South Africa the earliest Pentecostal churches to establish themselves were the Apostolic Faith Mission, the Full Gospel Church in South Africa and the Assemblies of God. They were also the first to set up congregations among Indian South Africans. Within the spectrum of the churches, however, Pentecostals were perceived as existing outside the mainstream. In this book Pillay takes a close-up view of 'the inner world of these Christians, to show that far from being a deviant or peculiar form of religion at the limits of Christendom, Pentecostalism should be seen as a vital expression of Christianity challenging other more established forms of Christianity by emphasising what in fact has become neglected'.

The ocean setting is part of the magic in this lyrical picture-book fantasy about a lonely girl who makes friends with a mermaid and then cannot let her go. Shy, solitary Eliza is close only with her fisherman dad. Then one day at the shore, she meets Freya, who gives Eliza a magical shell, and when Eliza puts the shell to her ear, she hears “songs so beautiful that they have to be shared.” Freya is a mermaid who wants to go back to her world beneath the sea, but she has lost her mirror and cannot return without it, so she stays with Eliza, longing for home. Then Eliza finds the mirror, but can she part with her beloved companion? The paintings, in ocean shades, are both glamorous and stormy, and show Eliza’s bond with the beautiful, glittery mermaid, as well as the raging seas and Freya’s grieving mother. Anyone who has listened to a shell will recognize the music. An accompanying CD features the author's reading of the story. Preschool-Grade 2. --Hazel Rochman
