9781841624990: Iceland

Replete with lava flows, colossal glaciers and thundering waterfalls, Iceland is one of Europe’s most unusual destinations. This brand-new edition of Bradt’s Iceland guide gives everything needed to break free from the pack and explore Iceland, a country increasingly accessible and affordable, on your own. Containing information on remote offshore islands, the uninhabited interior and Reykjavik’s bustling music and art scene, this remains the definitive guide. Compared to 2011, 2012 saw a 13.8% and 32% rise in summer and winter visitors to the country respectively, of which over 25% were arrivals from either the US or UK.

From the Back Cover:

·        Explore Iceland’s rich saga history in Vesturland
·        Climb to the top of Hallgrímskirkja, Reykjavík’s tallest building
·        Discover the country’s largest glaciers in the remote Hálendið
·        Cross into the Arctic Circle on windswept Grímsey Island
·        Experience traditional Icelandic cuisine and sample skyr or hákarl

With its combination of raw nature, ancient culture and overwhelming beauty, Iceland leaves an indelible imprint on those who visit. Stroll through the quirky capital of Reykjavík, with its colourful timber houses set against majestic Mount Esja, and then travel to Jökulsárlón’s black-sand lagoon to see icebergs up close. Hike through the dramatic landscapes of Landmannalaugar or the volatile geothermal area around Lake Mývatn, then head to the Látrabjarg bird cliffs to watch the antics of hundreds of thousands of puffins.

Fully updated in its third edition and packed with practical advice – from detailed maps and accommodation for all budgets to little-visited hot springs and the best horse-trekking sites – Bradt’s Iceland offers the most comprehensive coverage of this beguiling land of ice and fire.
