Hugo Vickers' first biography, Gladys, Duchess of Marlborough, was described by Time as 'sensitive, highly intelligent.' Sir Cecil Beaton read it in 1979 and invited Vickers to be his authorised biographer. Beaton died two days after Vickers began work on the book, an enterprise which took five years to complete.
