Frog is worried about his health: His heart is beating too fast. His friend Hare says that he must be in love - but who is he in love with? This important book deals not only with the nature of being in love but also the issue of prejudice: 'A frog can't be in love with a duck. You're green and she's white.' But Frog doesn't let that bother him...Green and white. Love knows no boundaries. This enchanting love story was the first book by Max Velthuijs on the Andersen list - now available as an Andersen paperback.

Max Velthuijs (1923-2005) was born in The Hague, the Netherlands. His picture books—published in 14 different languages, in countries all over the world—teach children about friendship, compassion, and sensitivity toward others. Among the many awards he received for his books are the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration in 2004, the Dutch Silver Pencil Award and the Dutch Golden Paintbrush (twice), the American Graphic Award of the Society of Illustrators, the French Prix de Treize, and the German Bestlist Award (also twice).
PreSchool-- The bright, colorful, and humorous watercolor illustrations done in a deceptively easy style set the tone in this engaging tale. Frog gets hot and cold, his heart races, and Hare informs him he is in love. Piglet finds this impossible to believe since Frog is green and Duck is white. Frog, however, sets off to prove his love by breaking the world's high-jump record. He is injured in the attempt, and while she nurses him back to health, Duck finds out who has been leaving all the lovely gifts. The moralizing does not interfere with the warmth and humor found in the story. Frog is a shy, loving, sensitive, and romantic character. --Regina Pauly, Free Library of Philadelphia
