9781842773932: Against Global Apartheid: South Africa Meets the World Bank, IMF and International Finance

South Africans hold positions of great influence in the world of international finance: President Thabo Mbeki is the leader of the Non-Aligned Movement and Commonwealth; Finance Minister Trevor Manuel recently chaired the World Bank and IMF Board of Governors; Mamphela Ramphele is a Managing Director of the World Bank, responsible for social development. Patrick Bond wonders about the impact these leaders will have in the new century. Are these leaders going to "break" the chains of global apartheid? What actions are grassroots acitivists taking around the world? Should key institutions like the World Bank and WTO be eliminated? These are among the questions he asks in this revealing investigation.

About the Author:

Patrick Bond is Associate Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand Graduate School of Public and Development Management, and a voluntary associate of the Alternative Information and Development Center for Economic Justice in Washington.

Review:

"This is by far one of the best critical contributions from the left in the continuing controversial role which the World Bank and IMF play in developing countries' economies and societies. Bond comes from a dying tradition of the activist/scholar very much in the mould of Noam Chomsky."-Garth Pere, Executive Director of the Institute for Global Dialogue

Book Description ZED BOOKS LTD, United Kingdom, 2004. Hardback. Book Condition: New. 2nd. Language: English . Brand New Book. This is a lucid analysis of neoliberal economics as formulated by the World Bank and IMF and imposed on Africa and South Africa in particular. It shows the economic and human damage wrought by these policies, and how they have displaced the originally radical and pro-people orientation of the ruling African National Congress. The leadership s change of heart has cost the South African people a million jobs, stymied their hopes of sustainable access to housing, water, electricity, health and education, dramatically worsened income inequality, and opened up a dangerous gulf of disillusion between voters and government. Patrick Bond describes how South African civil society has resisted corporate-dominated globalization, and argues that there is another way to more socially just and economically rapid development.
