An autobiography of a vet who worked in the Cardiganshire area for nearly 40 years. This work is an account of rural life, which traces the vet's early years in the profession to his retirement, whilst also weaving memories of his father, who was also a vet in the same area.

Review:

Born in August 1939, Richard Thomas was, it seems, always destined to follow in his fathers (J.T. Thomas, better known as Tomas y Vet) footsteps and become a veterinary surgeon, eventually living in and working from the house where he was born and raised Penrallt-ddu, Cardigan. Since retiring at sixty, he has, whilst living life to the full, taken time out to write his autobiography. This fascinating book is not, however, just one mans life story; it is a comprehensive local historical record and a pithy, sometimes deeply moving social commentary on the changes that have overtaken the world of farming in this beautiful part of Wales and the gradual disintegration of community he perceives as a result. The book is full of humour, anecdotes and jokes, often at his own expense, which leaven the underlying serious content, much like the man himself, it seems. People who live in and around Cardigan will, Im certain, enjoy name-spotting, whilst readers from further afield will derive much pleasure from such an honest insight of a Welsh vets life, be they the owner of sixty cows or one budgerigar. The photographs in the book accurately portray what soon becomes apparent as you read: that Richard Thomas is, as he readily admits, physically diminutive but in every other respect a larger-than-life character who loves and lives for his family, and the wider family made up of his many friends and clients. Keenly aware of how easy it is for professional people to develop inflated egos, he quotes this gem, delivered to himself and his fellow graduates by one of their professors on the day they received their degrees, as a way of keeping his feet firmly on the ground: You have succeeded in scraping through a very difficult five-year course and we are now in a position to set you free on the unsuspecting animal community. I want you all to remember one thing. Many of these animals will get better despite your treatment! Sit back and enjoy!
