Simon Wright was formerly the editor of the AA Restaurant Guide and now works as a freelance writer and restaurant consultant. He is a consultant on Channel 4's Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares and is a partner in the award winning Carmarthenshire pub/restaurant Y Polyn. His previous book Tough Cookies was a best-seller, his portrait of 4 of Britain's best and most controversial chefs winning much praise from Britain's leading newspapers including the Sunday Telegraph, Independent and the Sunday Times.Review:
Musing over the menu in your favourite restaurant, its likely that the most important thing on your mind is which mouthwatering dish to choose. But have you ever wondered where the food on your plate actually came from? The Wright Taste follows restaurateur Simon Wrights journey into the unfamiliar territory of livestock farmer, in order to trace the passage of his restaurants meat from animal to plate. Over a series of months, he reared a selection of animals on his small-holding in the Welsh countryside, with the intention of serving them at his restaurant and sharing his recipes with the reader. But will this newly converted farmer be able to see his project through? Or will his experience prompt him into serving more vegetarian options from now on? From Field to Fork Gordon Ramsay, Heston Blumenthal and Shaun Hill all said he couldnt do it. But former AA Restaurant Guide editor Simon Wright proved them wrong when he embarked on a project to trace the passage of his restaurants meat from field to fork. It ended in a field, but began in bed, where it occurred to Simon that despite his ardent belief that the finest food could only be produced from the finest ingredients, he had little idea of how these ingredients were produced. And thus the idea to rear his own animals for the restaurant table occurred to him. Soon the idea formulated into a plan, involving his father-in-laws land, and his familys support. It was only when he finally got out of bed that the reality of the enormous task ahead sank in. Friends, including some of Britains best chefs had their doubts, and even Simon was less than confident in his abilities at the outset, but - with a bit of help from his farming neighbours and a pinch of good luck - he successfully reared sheep, chicken, cows, pigs, geese and ducks before serving them in Y Polyn, his award-winning Carmarthenshire restaurant. So he tentatively embarked on his livestock adventure, accompanied by cameras that captured his highs and lows for the BBC Wales series The Wright Taste. And after he had successfully guided each animal through the doors of the slaughterhouse, he took his produce to some of Britains most respected chefs and most celebrated restaurants to take part in a taste test against their meticulously sourced meat. Simon won every time, though it was a very close thing. The Wright Taste is Simons story of a 'virgin' farmer's introduction to livestock farming, and the wonderful adventures he had along the way. He shares his recipes with us, and also imparts his new-found farming knowledge, including 'advice' on how to deal with psychopathic ducks! He sportingly shares his disasters along with his triumphs, the atmospheric photography and his engaging text bringing the cacophony of the farmyard to life. -- Gwasg Gomer
