About the Author:

David Squire is the renowned author of over fifty books on gardening. Alongside an immense practical knowledge of the subject, he has a special interest in plant folklore and garden history, which he combines in this title. He studied botany and horticulture at the Hertfordshire College of Horticulture and at the Royal Horticultural Society's Garden at Wisley, where he gained the Wisley Diploma in Horticulture.

From Booklist:

If time began in a garden, it can also stop there, providing serenity for the stressed, relaxation for the rushed. Indeed, humanity has always recognized and revered gardens for their restorative powers, harvesting plants thought to cure the body and creating oases designed to calm the soul. Reflecting contemporary society's fascination with venerable concepts such as feng shui, aromatherapy, and homeopathy, gardens today are frequently created with physical and psychological goals in mind. Though "healing plants" are typically associated with herbal or cosmetic applications, Squire presents a broader view, focusing on a surprising spectrum of plants and design features believed to rehabilitate the emotions and spirit. Presenting fact as well as folklore, Squire eloquently and exhaustively addresses aspects of gardening for the senses, from color and sound to fragrance and touch. As he deftly combines historical perspectives with practical considerations, Squire also provides a visual feast of alluring color photos and archival paintings and illustrations. Carol Haggas
