9781844073313: Second That Emotion: How Decisions, Trends, & Movements Are Shaped

A window into our decision-making processes and the illogical leaps that drive our support for personalities, brands, and movements

Why do more than 30 percent of Americans believe President Obama is a Muslim?

Why do most fans who supported Dove©'s "campaign for real beauty" feel comfortable ignoring the fact that the brand's parent company, Unilever, was also behind the Axe© campaign, a brand that has blatantly stereotyped women?

Why is Yoko Ono still held responsible for the breakup of the Beatles?

These and other random, yet related, questions are explained in Second That Emotion. Author Jeremy D. Holden, an advertising and communications expert, traces the fascinating process whereby a passion for an idea, a politician, a celebrity, or a brand gives rise to a set of illogical beliefs that becomes the basis for a powerful movement. Conventional wisdom has it that spin doctors and Madison Avenue are responsible for manipulating our thoughts, causing us to endorse ideas or buy products that we would otherwise reject outright. Holden shows that while advertising and propaganda can provide a spark and social media provides the kindling, individuals create consumer, political, and cultural trends based, more often than not, on thinking that they know logically to be flawed.

For businesspeople who want to see their company or brand break through, Second That Emotion is both essential and entertaining reading. For the rest of us, Holden provides a window into our decision-making processes, and how emotion-based illogical leaps drive our support for movements, whether they are political, commercial, or related to popular culture.

Book Description Earthscan Publications/Viva Books Private Limited, 2007. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. Description: In this brilliantly researched exposé, ?communications Rottweiler? Sharon Beder blasts open the backrooms and boardrooms to expose how the international corporate elite dictate global politics for their own benefit. Beder shows how they created business associations and ?think tanks? in the 1970s to drive public policy, forced the worldwide privatization and deregulation of public services in the 1980s and 1990s (enabling a massive transfer of ownership and control over essential services) and, still not satisfied, have worked relentlessly since the late 1990s to rewrite the very rules of the global economy to funnel wealth and power into their pockets. Want a globalized and homogenized world of conflict, poverty and massive environmental degradation run by a corporate oligarchy that wipes its feet on democracy? Or a democratic world, where poverty is history, companies work for people and clean water is a right not a privilege you pay for? Beder?s message is clear - it?s your world, and it?s time to fight for it. Contents: List of Boxes, Figures and Tables ? List of Acronyms and Abbreviations ? Acknowledgements ? A Corporate Class ? National Influence ? International Coercion ? Washington Consensus Down Under ? From Public Service to Private Profit ? The Trade Agenda ? Trade in Services ? Coercing Trade Agreements ? Deregulating Investment ? Globalization Versus Democracy ? Conclusion: The Triumph of Corporate Rights ? Bibliography ? Index Printed Pages: 276. Bookseller Inventory # 87091
