Laura Williams first discovered the joys of tying knots as a girl scout, and quickly progressed to creating friendship bracelets to wear and share as a teenager. In 2006, Laura moved from Wiltshire to the far north of the Scottish highlands, where she had the opportunity to devote more time to her creative endeavours. The discovery of Chinese and other decorative knots inspired the opening of her shop - NorthernDawn.etsy.com - on Etsy in 2009. Her beautiful pieces of beaded and knotted jewellery are all handmade using the expert skills shared in this book. Elise Mann, known as The Crafty Owl, has been a crafts writer, designer and teacher for over twenty years, and is a trained technical author as well as an expert in many crafts. She specializes in beadwork and beadmaking, and is News Editor for the Bead Society of Great Britain.
Spring 14 This book is well organised, easy-to-use, and beautifully illustrated. The cover describes 75 Decorative Knots as `A directory of knots and knotting techniques', definitely an accurate description. The Foreword gives advice on how to get the most out of this book. The book is set out in five areas: `Materials, Tools and Techniques', 'Directory of Knots', `Eastern Knots', `Western Knots' and finally `Jewellery Projects' to inspire the reader to use and combine the knots attractively. The first section contains the essential basic know-how; others you can pick and choose from depending on your requirements. Generally, knots are shown one per page. Each page has a clear close-up photo of the knot, a checklist providing information on the use, difficulty, equipment required, the cord type and use of the knot. This is incredibly useful and an amazing timesaver. A short written explanation and visual interpretation of the actual knot-making is clear and easy to follow. Historically, knots were used to hold clothing together and for decorative purposes. The ability to fasten garments or textile items using knots may provide a solution to the rather tricky elements found in many knitted, felted or woven creations of finishing and presentation. As I have an interest in jewellery I would buy this book as a reference for when I need an unusual fastening to finish an item to a higher standard. It would be a valuable reference book for a Guild library that could generate ideas for fund raising items using your own handmade braids and beads.
