Quentin Blake is one of the best-known and best-loved illustrators of our time, and his books with a wide range of authors, including Joan Aiken, Russell Hoban, Michael Rosen and Roald Dahl, have been treasured by generations of children throughout the world. In 1999 he became the first Children's Laureate. In 2005 he was awarded a CBE.

First published in England and France in 2005 to accompany the exhibit "Women of Paris in Pictures" at the Petit Palais Musee in Paris, this handsome book will please American art lovers as well. Not only does it spotlight exceptionally fine pictures of women, including many lesser-known works by well-known artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it also offers illustrator Blake's reflections on the pictures. These beautifully reproduced paintings, prints, and drawings are arranged in thematic sections. "Family Life" begins with an introductory page featuring Blake's ink drawing of a woman reading to a passel of kids, while, behind her back, two winged children playfully lift a beaming toddler into the air. The next four pages showcase pictures in full color, followed by a page of Blake's commentary on them. High-school art students may find the loose, freewheeling style of Blake's art makes the more formal "fine art" more approachable. Recommended for larger collections, this inviting art book offers interesting visual perspectives on woman of the period. Carolyn Phelan
