What was life like for the woolly mammoth, who roamed the Earth starting over 100,000 years ago? What did these big shaggy beasts eat? Did they have enemies? Did they have families? Did they have fun? In this book, Mick Manning and Brita Granström show that woolly mammoths were the powerhouses of their time, braving terrible climates and fending off natural predators, the most terrifying of which were human beings! These fascinating creatures appear in their natural habitat, grazing, fighting, and even relaxing and playing with their mates and offspring. Fact-checked by mammoth expert Professor Adrian Lister, the book highlights the latest discoveries about the species and includes a glossary, an illustrative fact strip, and a geological timeline. The authors’ trademark poetic text and vibrant illustrations bring the beasts to life for young readers.

Manning and Granström, whose previous nonfiction picture books include What Mr. Darwin Saw (2009) and Viking Longship (2007), now introduce woolly mammoths. The large illustrations, black pencil drawings tinted with watercolors, use wonderfully scruffy lines to depict mammoths foraging, warding off wolves, defending their “unbelievably cute” calves, as well as being hunted by Ice Age humans, who use their body parts for meat, clothing, shelter, and weaponry. The book includes two kinds of text. For younger children, there are uneven rhyming verses written in the colloquial, somewhat anthropomorphic voice of a mammoth, a self-described “big hairy beastie” and “gentle giant,” ferocious only in defense and worried about extinction. Running in the narrow panels alongside each wide, double-page spread are interesting bits of related information printed in smaller type and illustrated with brown pencil drawings. A time line and glossary are appended. Published in association with London’s Natural History Museum. Grades K-3. --Carolyn Phelan
