9781845115937: The Duel: Castlereagh, Canning and Deadly Cabinet Rivalry

The fateful duel of 1809 between Lord Castlereagh and George Canning is one of the great puzzles of 19th-century British politics. What made these two titans of the political scene - close colleagues and both highly effective members of the Cabinet - draw arms against each other? Canning was Foreign Secretary while Castlereagh was Secretary of State for War and the Colonies: what were they thinking on that ominous morning and what was important enough to provoke two Cabinet ministers to such extraordinary behaviour?
This detailed history of the famous duel is the first to examine fully the careers of these two great men and the political conflicts that brought them to fire shots at each other on Putney Heath. Drawing on previously overlooked private papers, Giles Hunt traces what happened on that eventful day and its consequences for British politics. Castlereagh is traditionally depicted as an old-fashioned Tory reactionary, Canning as a brilliant but ambitious liberal. The Duel analyses how much truth there is in these descriptions and examines the roots of the political and personal rivalry which led these two men to face each other with pistols early in the morning of 21st September 1809 in one of the strangest and most significant duels of history.

About the Author:

Giles Hunt's previous publications include Mehitabel Canning: A Redoubtable Woman, based on the letters of the woman who was George Canning's guardian from the age of six, and Launcelot Fleming: A Portrait.

Review:

'The first work to explore the duel between Castlereagh and Canning in any depth or to trace its origins and consequences. Based on solid original research and presented in a readable and attractive manner, Hunt's work adds considerably to our knowledge, both of the events themselves and their possible explanation.' -- Rory Muir, University of Adelaide ""This is a fascinating analysis of the most extraordinary event in the history of the British Cabinet.""--Owen Chadwick, University of Cambridge ""A fine and engaging portrait of Canning and Castlereagh’s rivalry.""-- Raymond Carr, The Spectator

""This is a thoroughly fascinating book, to be warmly commended to anyone with an interest in a period rich in incidents; one that makes our modern politics seem rather dull and dreary, and our politicians unadventurous and unimaginative.""-- Sir Patrick Cormack MP of The House Magazine

""A careful and impressively detailed account""-- Peter G. R. Jones, Times Literary Supplement

‘Mr. Hunt is an excellent researcher, and his own grit and determination have clarified a good deal of historical murk.’  - Edward Pearce, TRIBUNE, 6 March 2009

Book Description IB Tauris, 2008. Book Condition: New. In 1809, at the height of the struggle against Napoleon, Britain's Secretary of State for War, Lord Castlereagh, challenged the Foreign Secretary, George Canning, to a duel. The two men met on Putney Heath, and Canning was wounded in the thigh. Drawing on previously overlooked private papers, this detailed history examines the poisonous rivalry that led two eminent statesmen to risk their lives in the midst of a national emergency, and traces the far-reaching consequences of this bizarre incident.
