Dr. Carmen Cimpeanu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Engineering at the University of Agricultural Science and Veterinary Medicine (UASMV), Bucharest, Romania, where she has been teaching and advising students in the fields of Environmental Biochemistry, Soil and Water Biology, Ecology, Heavy metals pollution expertise and control. Previously, she worked in the Biotechnology Faculty for ten years, teaching Molecular and Cellular Biology. She has two degrees: one in Soil Science and the other in Biology, as well as a PhD (2003) in heavy metals pollution. Dr. Cimpeanu s current research involves soil and water quality concerns and bioremediation of contaminants. She gathers, interprets and evaluates information about the biology, chemistry, and physics of soils to inform and influence issues as diverse as agricultural production, environmental quality, human health, climate change, land remediation and biodiversity. She has participated in 50 national and European projects as a member or as a director. In addition, she is recognized as an expert for the Romanian National Research Programs. Dr. Maria Pele is a Professor in the Biotechnology Department at the University of Agricultural Science and Veterinary Medicine, Bucharest, Romania (USAMV) where she teaches and advises students in the fields of biotechnologies, analytical chemistry and instrumental applications, enzymology and biochemistry. She received her PhD in Biology from the University of Bucharest in 1996, with a specialization in Biotechnology. From 1996 to 2012, she was the Head of the Chemistry Department at USAMV - Faculty of Biotechnology. She also served as the Director of four sub programs of the National Research Program BIOTECH, with the responsibility to manage, coordinate and monitor national research projects in the biotechnology field. In this position, she has monitored more than 200 projects. Dr. Pele s current research involves biotechnologies for obtaining and using food enzymes, antibiotics, hormones and natural colorants; problems regarding pollution with heavy metals, nitrates and nitrites and phenolic compounds; experiments in the use of microorganisms for bioremediation; problems concerning food safety and security. She has published more than 200 journal papers, books, proceedings and standards, has delivered keynote addresses and invited lectures, and is involved in referee tasks for some international journals. She was also a member of teams that obtained four national patents for the production of enzymatic products and concentrated juices. From 2000 to 2007 Dr. Pele served as President of the Technique Committee CT 222 Biotechnologies from Romania and before 1990 was a Member of the National Council for Science and Technology Biochemistry and Enzymology Commission. In addition, she often serves as an independent expert for the Romanian National Research Programs and FP7.Review:
