Ages 5-7. In Charlie's classroom, Friday is "special" day, when children bring special things from home. Children will empathize with Charlie's disappointment when he can't find anything wonderful enough for show-and-tell. His mother has suggestions but is too involved with baby Sally's routine to help much. Over the next week, Charlie and his mom both try to find something special, but when Sally smiles her first smile for Charlie, he decides to show his sister to his classmates. With a longish text, this should suit primary-grade children, who'll recognize the situation. Ayliffe's cut-and torn-paper collages brighten this upbeat picture book. Some of the pages look a bit cluttered, but the lines are clean, the colors are sunny, and the forms are more fluid in line and more natural in depicting characters than is the case in most collage illustrations. A cheerful big brother^-little sister story. Carolyn Phelan
