9781846275371: Multiples: 12 Stories in 18 Languages by 61 Authors

Like Chinese whispers, the rules of this literary game are simple: the first writer translates an unknown story into English, which a second writer then translates into a different language, and a third translates back into English, and so on, down the line. As the stories are told and retold, out of English and in again, they are transformed, twisted and turned into something new. Featuring an all-star international line-up of writers from Zadie Smith to Alejandro Zambra, via Jeffrey Eugenides, Laurent Binet, Javier Marias, David Mitchell, Colm Toibin, Etgar Keret and Sheila Heti, this collection is pure literary entertainment. Playful, provocative and wilfully inventive, Multiples asks fascinating questions about the relationship between a translation and a version, about the art of storytelling, and about the way that our individual linguistic choices reflect our shared cultural prejudices. Here, we see not so much what is lost in translation, but what is found.

Book Description Portobello. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. "Mulitiples", aka "McSweeney's Quarterly Concern, Issue 42". Edited by Adam Thirwell. Portobello. 2013. Hardcover. First U.K. edition. First-printing. The design of this edition, standard hardcover format, is quite different than the U.S. edition, an oblong and unwieldy paperback that is pretty much unshelvable. It can really only be stored flat. This edition does not trade on the McSweeney's name or the Quarterly Concern. Though mentioned, for example, as, "In association with McSweeney's Quarterly Concern", that's about it. **********Condition: Near Fine / Near Fine. **********Please contact for video link and/or a larger image set. "Multiples" includes many of the usual McSweeney's suspects: Lydia Davis, Dave Eggers, Sheila Heti, David Mitchell, Zadie Smith. As well as Nadeem Aslam, John Banville, Laurent Binet, Adam Foulds, Francisco Goldman, Aleksandar Hemon, Etgar Keret, Tom McCarthy, Peter Stamm, Colm Tóíbín, et al. **********I make every effort not to overstate grade. Pictures, video, and description are as honest as I know to make them. Please make your own judgment accordingly. **********All books are packed in acid-free bags to protect from rubbing, and wrapped in bubble-wrap as needed. Will ship in box with additional padding - whatever is necessary to ensure that the book(s) is delivered in the same condition as when packed. If shipped in a flat, the same care for protection of the book will be taken. *****Books ship to continental U.S. only. Bookseller Inventory # 101-McS-related
