Mary Hoffman lives just outside Oxford, UK where she writes in a room with big French windows looking out onto her garden. Her first book was published in 1975 and since then, she has written over ninety books for children and teenagers. The Twelve Dancing Princesses is one of her favorite fairy tales. This is her first project with Barefoot Books.
Miss Clara is a French artist with a gift for creating delicate and intricate illustrations. First, she creates miniature maquettes of princesses, princes, fairies, hobgoblins and other magical creatures, then she makes detailed scenes in which to photograph them. She finishes these images digitally to create the evocative and ethereal atmosphere that characterizes her work.
K-Gr 3-This is a chapter-book retelling of the timeless tale of 12 princesses who wake each morning from their locked bedchamber tired and with worn slippers and the prince who uncovers their secret and wins the hand of the eldest sibling. A familiar text is paired with Miss Clara's unique artwork utilizing miniature maquettes (scale models) to earn this oft-told tale a second look. The artist's attention to detail in shaping the dolls, furniture, and costumes is extraordinary. These models are then photographed and graphically enhanced to give them a Renaissance look. The text is geared toward "confident readers" and while it is unremarkable, the stunning and intricate illustrations are definitely a draw, although they may appeal more to adults than children.
