9781847802897: I Want a Pet

"I quite fancy a pet - an African lion or an octopus or even a boa constrictor. The trouble is, Mum and Dad and Granny and Grandad all have objections to pets. Grandad says that sheep are forever following you around; Dad says wolves give him a headache; and Mum says she'll cancel tea-time if I mention bats in the wardrobe again. So I must try to find a pet that none of them will mind. What could I have?". Lauren Child's deliciously droll riddle of a text, accompanied by her own delightful and wacky illustrations, is sure to raise chuckles with grown-ups and children alike.

About the Author:

Lauren Child is one of the top children's author-illustrators in the U.K. Her Charlie and Lola series of picture books have been made into a BBC television series. She lives in Hampstead in London.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 2-Quirky, scratchy line drawings in bold colors complement an offbeat story about a young girl's yearning for an animal companion. A lion, a sheep, a wolf, an octopus, a boa constrictor, and a bat all seem like good choices-until their undesirable qualities are pointed out by family members. Spurning the clean, quiet goldfish offered by the store proprietor, the child finally settles on a large, lavender egg that is beginning to hatch. While some children may be frustrated by the open ending, others will love the element of mystery and enjoy speculating on what will emerge from the egg. Flat, childlike drawings depict animals and people with comically skinny appendages and round, balloonlike heads. Despite the apparent simplicity of the illustrations, closer examination reveals entertaining details, including the young narrator's outfits that change from page to page. Variations in facial expression are effected with only a few small adjustments to the line of her mouth or the direction of her gaze. Pair this with Holly Keller's Furry (Greenwillow, 1992; o.p.) and Tres Seymour's I Love My Buzzard (Orchard, 1994) for a storytime about unusual pets.
