George Armstrong Custer was one of the most flamboyant and controversial officers ever to have served in the United States Army.
This superbly illustrated book provides a unique visual record of this famous commander from his graduation at West Point to the last great battle of the American West: the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Rare photographs from private collections show his stylish uniforms, weapons and artifacts, and reveal the faces of the men who rode into legend with him. Includes images of the units he commanded and of the soldiers who fought – and some of whom died – at the Little Big Horn.

John P. Langellier received his BA and MA in history and historical archaeology from the University of San Diego, and a Ph.D. from Kansas State University. He spent over four decades in varied public history positions. Langellier has written, co-written, and/or edited dozens of books and monographs and scores of articles. In September, 2020, the National Park Service (NPS) and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASAALH), in a joint venture, selected him as principal investigator for a contextual study related to the buffalo soldiers and the national parks. That assignment made this publication possible.
