Whisky Galore (Nick Hern) - Softcover

9781848428492: Whisky Galore (Nick Hern)

Synopsis

It's 1955 and the Pallas Players, an all-female theatre company, are putting on a play... Whisky Galore.

They take us back to 1943 and the Scottish islands of Great Todday and Little Todday, where disaster has struck! The whisky supply has dried up because of the War and tensions are running high.

Mysterious Mr Brown arrives, saying he is a tweed salesman but asking lots of questions about their lack of patriotism, whilst parents are unhappy about romances blossoming in the younger generation.

Relief comes when a ship carrying 50,000 cases of whisky is wrecked just offshore. Then it's every islander for themselves as they try to 'save' as many bottles as possible before snooty Mr Waggett of the Home Guard can put a stop to their fun.

This new adaptation is a tribute to the feisty all-female touring theatre companies of the post-war years. Join the Pallas Players as they breathe fresh life into the hilarious characters of Compton Mackenzie's comedy classic.

About the Author

Compton Mackenzie (1883–1972) was a writer, cultural commentator, raconteur and lifelong Scottish nationalist. He was one of the co-founders in 1928 of the Scottish National Party. He was knighted in 1952.

Philip Goulding is a playwright and screenwriter. His work includes a stage adaptation of Compton Mackenzie's Whisky Galore (Oldham Coliseum / Hull Truck / New Vic Stoke, 2018).

Review

"Philip Goulding's adaptation retains the authenticity of Mackenzie's mellifluous prose and wittily divvies up twenty-five characters among a hard-working cast of seven. An enjoyably bright and breezy retelling of a classic comic tale."

(The Stage)

"Captures the absurdity of Mackenzie's story and retains its joyful sense of mischief."
