Robert I. Girardi earned his M.A. in Public History from Loyola University of Chicago. He is a past president of the Chicago Civil War Round Table, and is the author of nine published books, numerous essays and book reviews, and is a popular speaker on all aspects of the Civil War, to audiences of all ages and levels of interest. He is on the board of directors of the Illinois State Historical Society and the Camp Douglas Restoration Foundation. He was the 2010 winner of the Chicago CWRT Nevins-Freeman Award for scholarship and service.
