Jean Murray takes the reader through the changing face of Ireland from the post war years to the present day. And the journey, described with a lyrical Irish voice, is seen through the eyes of her family, through drink addiction, violence, poverty, success, love and fear and eventually the overcoming of depression. And at the centre of this autobiography is her daughter, Yasmin, the girl with disabilities whose own struggle shows her mother the way to freedom in life: Her beautiful flower.

From the Author:

When I had my last child born in September 2004, I went straight into post natal depression. I suspected I had suffered with post natal depression on my other children, but I was younger and I was able to get on with things. This time, the parenting pressures seemed to multiply and at a routine check up, the health nurse declared my youngest child had a delayed mental development, to what degree came after a couple of years of assessments. I was overwhelmed by my job as a Mother and I struggled to cope.I was lost, I was sad and I didn't like myself very much.I followed the road of assessments and help supports for my daughter and sturdied myself for the hard road of supporting her education. I knew I wanted her educated, physically and literally and I knew I had to carry on the work in my home when she left the school environment. What I didn't know then on the start of our journey that my little girl would become my teacher. Her little brain made learning very difficult for her and it made her body writhe in agony. Her brain fought hard not to learn! But her soul fought harder and she began to learn! She began to learn to read and she began to learn to write and she began to learn to play.I decided then to follow example of this little girl and I began to fight! I began to trust in God and I began to heal! When I saw the wonders that were evolving around me I had to write my story. My story is inspired by little girl Yasmin, 'My Beautiful Flower'. I began to discover myself and I went down the road of my past. I came away from my story with acceptance and peace not resentment nor blame.I realized that I was blessed to have a gift from God to show me the way through life. And I am very grateful.

From the Back Cover:

In Ireland today, there seems to be at least one child in every family with moderate to severe learning difficulties. I questioned why! I also discovered that at least one member in every family suffers with mild to moderate to severe depression. And I wanted to know why!So I did a bit of research and I found that firstly, nourishing food obviously is an extremely necessary factor to the child's growing brain and let's face it, given the amount of poverty in Ireland's last hundred years and our consistent recessions, we could never provide our children with proper nutrition. When the 'Celtic Tiger' came, it brought a new craze of fast food. All of a sudden, our little off springs were encouraged to eat saturated fats and essential nutrients went missing from our childrens' diet. Under nourished brains is a main factor in chemical imbalances and low serotonin levels, leading to depression. I also believe that depression in us biological parents causes the genetic damage in our children's brains, leaving them with severe learning difficulties and disabilities.Inside my story, I give you lots of information on how to help your child and yourself.
