In this guide to stencilling, motifs are grouped under: the kitchen garden; the formal garden; the seashore; and simple paterning. Over 40 stencil templates are included to cut out and trace. The core designs are adapted for different surfaces and settings, such as walls, tiles, fabric, furniture and floors. The main technique used is spray stencilling but this book also covers the effects achievable by stippling, sponging, and stencilling on glass.

Simone Smart has developed a range of stenciled giftware which she sells through mail order, at her shop in Wilton, Wiltshire and through a gallery in 5th Avenue, New York. Her commissions for private clients are extensive and are in addition to her work for V and A Enterprises (giftware for the Victoria and Albert Museum, London). She runs regular stencil workshops, focusing on designing, cutting and spray stenciling.
Pia Tryde is amongst the most talented and versatile of today's photographers and her photography is recognizable by the freshness of her approach. Her use of natural light brings out the truest colors in her subject matter and her shots have an honesty about them that comes from their clean unclutteredness. Her recent work includes pictures for "Julia Bird's Soft Furnishings" and "New Swedish Style" by Sasha Waddell. From Booklist:
English designer Smart is bound for glory with her first crafts book to truly transcend the stereotype. Here, she selects more than 40 designs from nature, streamlines them into icons, and stencils--judiciously--all manner of interior and exterior home objects. Two guard-dog greyhounds, for example, stand watch over the front door, while frosted fish swim at the bottom of a vinyl shower curtain. Every motif includes text of how-tos (and occasional don'ts). Instructions are clear for applying paint to a wide variety of items, from vinyl to Dutch paneling. No experience is needed--and patterns are elegant enough to segue from kitchen to boudoir. Another Kaffe Fassett genius in the making. Barbara Jacobs
