aberrant splicing n. The result of mutations in consensus sequences of introns. Such mutations cause exon skipping, activation of cryptic site, creation of pseudoexon within introns, and intron retention to redefine exon-intron structure, and these result in the direct joining of nonconsecutive exons. In human genome, a single base substitution in the 5 splice site can cause an aberrant splicing event.
