The Dead Sea scrolls were found about 8 miles south of Jericho Khirbet Qumran. Members of an ancient Jewish sect climbed the nearby cliffs in order to hide away in caves their precious writings. And they remained there for some 2000 years. This, briefly, is the story of their discovery. The first lot of documents, consisting of several biblical and nine – biblical scrolls, was found accidentally by an Arab shepherd in the spring of 1947. Then, between February 1952 in January 1956, ten more caves were located for located . Altogether, 11 more or less complete Dead Sea Scrolls and thousands of fragments belonging originally to almost 600 manuscripts, amounts to a substantial body of literature covering the Hebrew Bible, other religious compositions, and works proper to a particular religious sect.

Written in Hebrew and Aramaic and dating roughly from 200 BC to the mid first century AD, they afford an unparalleled and revolutionary insight into Palestinian Jewish life and ideology at a very crucial period in the development of Jewish and Christian religious thought. Since its first publication in 1962, The Dead Sea Scrolls in English has established itself as the standard English translation of the non-biblical Qumran scrolls and as a handy introduction to the organization, customs, history and beliefs of the community responsible for them. This third edition contains a major updating. In particular, three new opening chapters replace the previous ones, and a considerable amount of fresh material, made available since the 1975 revision, has also been added. Above all, readers are now offered in English the Temple Scroll, the most voluminous of all the Qumran texts. Augmented and brought up to date, The Dead Sea Scrolls in English will continue to provide reliable, direct access to these fascinating documents and to act as an authoritative guide for scholars, students and educated laymen interested in ancient Judaism and nascent Christianity. [Wikipedia] Géza Vermes, FBA (22 June 1924 - 8 May 2013) was a British academic, Biblical scholar, and Judaist of Hungarian Jewish descent?one who also served as a Catholic priest in his youth?and scholar specialized in the field of the history of religion, particularly ancient Judaism and early Christianity. He is best known for his complete translation of the Dead Sea Scrolls into English; his research focused on the Dead Sea Scrolls and other Ancient Hebrew writings in Aramaic such as the Targumim, and on the life and religion of Jesus. Vermes was one of the most important voices in contemporary Jesus research, and he has been described as the greatest Jesus scholar of his time. Vermes' written work on Jesus focuses principally on the Jewishness of the historical Jesus, as seen in the broader context of the narrative scope of Jewish history and theology, while questioning and challenging the basis of the Christian doctrine on Jesus.
