Unlike most of his contemporaries, Bruegel rejected pictorial fashions of the day and the romanticism of an Italianate style. Grounded in the traditions of his own country, he chose rather to develop the conventions of Flemish genre painting and to derive inspiration from the great medieval master of the bizarre, Hieronymus Bosch. Bruegel's paintings chronicle the festivals, ceremonies, traditions, and everyday events of 16th century peasant life. Under his scrutiny the country scene reveals itself in fine detail; characters reveal themselves through their actions, or by virtue of a gesture or grimace. There are no individual portraits and the figures cut a pattern of exalted movement on a canvas animated by the rhythm of colour. Bruegel's scenes are justifiably famous. Images such as "Hunters in the Snow," "The Harvest," and "The Parable of the Blind" are known world~wide and are essential to the visual vocabulary of the artistically knowledgeable. This edition, however, contains more than the most celebrated canvases. It reproduces the entire body of extant painted works ~ the majority in full~colour ~rnanv of which have details enlarged to plate size. The fine quality graphics are accompanied by a comprehensive text, the result of study made over a period of twenty years. It deals in detail with the contemporary documentary evidence of Bruegel's life; his political, philosophical, and religious convictions; his materials; the historic events of the period; and many other aspects of his prolific career. Also included are a synoptic table giving a concordance of events and works, a chronological table ot the most notable events of the period, a comprehensive list ot extant works, and a bibliography of the principal works and studies devoted to Pieter Bruegel.
