Book by Edwards, Susan

Psychologist Edwards aims to share what men have expressed to her about their feelings of love. Drawing on subjects from both her practice and personal life, Edwards asked men to explain, in short passages ranging from a paragraph to a few pages, why they have committed to love and how it has affected their lives. Edwards then comments insightfully on how these men have grown in their search for and acquisition of loving relationships. Chapters have summarizing statements and occasional personal comments by the author. Interspersed with these musings are several of the author's poems about love. Although the insights are interesting, not much new ground is covered here. Still, men seeking confirmation of their feelings and women who want to encourage their male counterparts to express feelings of love will find something here. For large public library collections.

Some men believe in love and some do not. Some will change and some will not. Any man conflicted about the role of love in his life will find empathy here. A series of first-person accounts reflect every manner of man that Edwards has encountered during 20 years as a psychologist. Those who have come to love successfully share a commonality of attributes that supersedes age, race, or profession. Edwards intersperses effective commentaries, point summaries, original poetry, and personal advice among the narratives. Her positive approach counteracts the stereotypical problem-solving view and points to what is right about male-female relationships. This offer of hope promises that love is always a choice.
