The German navy, the Kreigsmarine, seemed destined to join with the air and land forces of the Third Reich to bring Hitler to victory in World War II. This book shows how this previously all-conquering navy was unable to deploy its new vessels and strategies in the last year of the war. Blockaded in its ports, picked off by superior enemy forces when it sailed, it was unable to use its new vessels and weaponry, utilize fresh tactics or bring on new officers. Its technological advances were never tested and its young leaders never confronted the enemy. This story of disillusionment and unfulfilled ambition is told here, using diaries and archives to explain how the German navy had to succumb to defeat.

V E Tarrant, an ex-Navy man, has achieved an international reputation for theReview:
I read this 3 years ago,and this is a super, illustrated book about a much-neglected period of German Naval History. The depth of research is very good, the illustrations are superb, including rare photographs of Wrecks of famous ships like "Scheer", I think it is an essential addition for anyone interested in German Naval History, or of World War Two.The companion to Hitlers Naval War by Cajus Beeker --By David I. Walker
This book is a brilliant account of the final year for the Kriegsmarine. It is the story of a doomed generation of sailors who bravely and hopelessly went to battle knowing that theirs was a hopeless cause. Tarrant (as usual) provides an interseting text, and keeps the book moving along. He gives you a good impression of the overwhelming force deployed by the Allies at the end of the Second World War. --By Michael Knight
what a book. read this and the other two books in the trilogy and you find it easy to understand how germany lost the war --By robert michael lowe
