Brian King has earned an international reputation for the quality of his models, all built using skills initially learned during a 5-year craft apprenticeship when he acquired the basic practical skills in both wood and metal work. These skills, allied to a natural talent, have resulted in his very complicated models of large battleships from all eras. This book is a compilation of material originally published in the specialist hobby magazine Model Boats in which the master modeler has passed on many gems of experience to would-be builders of ship models, including anchors, gun barrels, portholes, decking, rudders, propellors, fittings, turrets, basic hulls, close-up on life saving gear, cowl ventilators, computers and modelling, photographing your models and working to dimensions. A lifetime of modelling experience is contained within these pages. There are few modelers, expert or novice, who will not benefit from this opportunity to read and learn. Previous books by Brian King include Advanced Ship Modelling (2000; 1-85486-122-0) and Photo Etching (2005; 1-85486-237-5).

This book contains 184 pages packed with many photographs and diagrams by this eminent author, who has also written many articles for the specialist boat magazine Model Boats. The book is a compilation of material taken from his articles written in the magazine. There are 43 short chapters which cover all subjects from tools to use. For example, saws, drills, lathes and solders and, most importantly, the parts that have to be added to the ship to complete the finished article, the anchors, davits, companionways, guns, shrouds, ratlines, masts and all the basic requirements needed for a model. There are many good hints on how to paint the hull correctly and the installation of rudders and propellers. This book solves all solutions and helps to make it a superior ship model. The author's specialty is warships, and there are examples of his superb work. The book is very detailed, and I personally think aimed more for the 'Professional' or superior model maker, and not for the likes of myself, who has problems sticking together your average plastic kit. However, after saying that, I feel this book will help the more discerning modeller. It is a very well produced publication, and I recommend it to all serious model makers - The Nautical Magazine The author, an experienced ship modeller, draws on his considerable skills to describe how to build a ship's hull, make gun barrels, life-saving gear and cast resin and plastic parts. A well illustrated aid for modellers of all skill levels - Ships Monthly
