This monograph focuses on a systemic approach to dream interpretation and the unique importance of the initial dream. The first dream reported in a psychoanalytic therapy session poignantly encapsulates the major issues that the patient brings to the treatment. These dreams 'herald' the trajectory of the treatment and can be interpreted in the service of psychodynamic diagnosis and prognosis. The book melds aspects of Jungian dream analysis, with neo-Freudian analytic thought, current neurobiological concepts, and Buddhist psychology, to yield a rich and powerful understanding of how dreams symbolize the multifaceted aspects of the psyche. Multiple examples of initial dreams are discussed in detail, with suggestions for how they can inform the analytic stance and serve as objects for analysis over the course of a treatment.

About the Author:

Richard Kradin is Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School and member of the Departments of Medicine and the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He is a supervising analyst and teaches courses on dream interpretation to psychotherapists and candidates in psychoanalysis.

Review:

'Dr Kradin is a true polymath. He is a physician, and Jungian analyst and most importantly, a true scholar of the classics. He brings the wealth of his prodigious intellect to this book, and offers an intellectual feast to the reader, who like myself has longed to see a return to the classics in the current nalytic literature. While this book may serve the beginning clinician because of the examples that are illuminating for their therapeutic work, it has an even greater appeal to the more experienced and sophisticated reader. From whatever vantage point, it's a treat to enjoy, and to use in thinking deeply about dreams, symbols, and the meanings of our internal life.'- Anne Alonso, PhD'The notion that dreams may foreshadow themes which are to pervade subsequent psychotherapeutic processes, is central to the work of C.G. Jung. Dr Kradin's book gives the reader a manual to an interpretative analysis of dreams which is simple to follow, and will encourage readers to experiment with the peculiar ability of dreaming to anticipate the future by digesting the past. Jung's main thoughts about dreaming are clearly set forth, and thus this book provides an excellent introduction to the craft of Jungian dream analysis. By giving us a rich variety of individual cases this book will stimulate the mind, and may lead the reader to search deeper into our nightly mysteries.'- Robert Bosnak, Author of A Little Course in Dreams and Embodied Imagination
