"There is no doubt that a perfect room makes you feel deeply happy," observes Caroline Wrey. While this is certainly true, it is that very search for perfection that intimidates most people when they set about redecorating. But if you follow Wrey's excellent instructions for making the "goodies" shown here--and if you're at least moderately adept at the sewing machine--you'll go a long way toward achieving your goal. Filled with savvy design advice, Finishing Touches takes a room-by-room approach and offers thorough step-by-step instructions for 28 projects (including window treatments, cushions, bed linens, lampshades, and table coverings), with helpful photos of each step in addition to the finished product in a full-room setting. Beyond the specifics, Wrey offers a brief general analysis of what makes each room work and dissects the fabric choices for them: the traditional blue in the kitchen, for example, is given a sophisticated twist by pairing it with taupe rather than white; the dresser in a guest bedroom provides a good focal point as well as a place to set out welcoming touches like fresh flowers, a decanter of water, and writing paper and pens. Each chapter also includes a useful "style story" explaining how to arrange a table, display a collection, dress a bed, and more. --Amy HandyFrom Library Journal:
Wrey provides clearly written and illustrated instructions on larger projects, such as draperies and other soft furnishings that will add decorative touches to an already decorated room. Although some projects are simple, such as a message board that requires no sewing, most are a bit more complex. The projects are arranged by room into chapters in which Wrey gives suggested color schemes and fabrics and concludes with a "style story" with suggestions on dressing a bed or setting a table.
