The authors of the superb The Complete Guide to Glass Painting expanded on the 400-motif library included in that volume to produce a little handbook brimming with great pattern templates. The 22 design categories include flowers, foliage, animals, seashore, celestial, holidays, alphabets, and borders--some very basic, others extremely detailed, and all nicely conceived and not cutesy. A brief techniques section explains pattern transfer and outlining techniques. These patterns would also lend themselves easily to many other crafts, such as wood burning or painting on other surfaces. --Amy Handy

Pattern sourcebooks tend to be interchangeable for various crafts, which is somewhat the case with these two books. Gear and Freestone's work is a large collection similar to Mary McCarthy's The Crafter's Pattern Sourcebook (LJ 10/15/99). These motifs are arranged into general categories such as flowers or birds without further identification of item or source. However, these omissions probably do not diminish its usefulness. Everett offers a more limited collection of designs with instructions for etchings and photographs of finished pieces, some rather complex landscapes for advanced projects. Both books would be useful in crafts collections needing more design source material.
