Synopsis
(Mentally disordered offenders are a forgotten people inside Britain's overcrowded and crisis-ridden penal establishment. Such offenders include those suffering from temporary illness, from serious disorders such as schizophrenia, from drug or alcohol dependency, or from a variety of sexual problems. At present, such offenders face a lottery because there is no legally binding procedure for dealing with them. Years of government neglect have led to an inadequate number of hospital beds and treatment facilities, either within or outside the penal system, and too often a barely trained prison officer, or even a police officer, is expected to cope with a disordered and possibly dangerous inmate. This book is an investigation into mentally disordered offenders.
