Thomas F. Walsh invites the reader to share his own experiences and those of people he has encountered: the death of a loved one leads to a celebration of life; a young student spends scarce and precious money on The Complete Works of Shakespeare; in a London pub an emigrant from the west of Ireland recalls the lake of his childhood and the poem associated with it; and a mother who never went beyond primary school loves poetry and can quote Gray and Milton. In Silent Moments reflects on the importance of appreciating the present while holding on to the past and on how a happy memory can shelter us from grief.
