They came to the tropical resort for different reasons. Ellen Bouchard fell in love with Sanibel Island as a teenager, on holiday. It made no sense for her, in her thirties, to abandon a career as a lab technician in a Boston hospital, sell her car and head for Florida to waitress in a resort restaurant. Her widowed father would worry about her. But, one Friday, she handed the lab keys to her replacement, her house keys to her landlord, and took a flight south, to get away from the cold routine of slides that spelled breast cancer for women she would never meet. Patricia Cullen drove to Sanibel. Drove in her ex-boyfriend's car. The one he gave her the night he got promoted; and dumped her. Not that he would call it dumping her. McDara Redmond was way too nice a guy for that. But Patricia felt pretty dumped, all the same. Dumped for dullness. For her, Sanibel looked like an opportunity to find out how dull she really was. Or not. Dave and Jean were headed to Sanibel for their honeymoon, as part of the deal with a celebrity magazine which would be the first to publish their wedding pictures. They were headed for the paradise island; and for the hell of a hurricane that would change their lives and reveal their true selves.
