About the Author

David Shankland is Senior Lecturer in Social Anthropology at the University of Bristol. He was previously Assistant and Acting Director at the British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara. He has travelled, worked and researched extensively in Turkey. He is the author of Islam and Society in Turkey and The Alevis in modern Turkey: the emergence of a secular Islamic tradition.
