"Escape from the Veil" is Sarah Godsell's true story of her marriage to a Saudi and how it turned out to be the biggest mistake she was ever going to make in her life. Sarah and Yousef were together for about a year before they decided to get married during which time Sarah believed that she had found a man that girls can only dream of. Yousef was so kind, caring and made her laugh. They seemed to have so much in common and never got bored with each other's company. Once they were married however things began to change and life soon became unbearable for Sarah, living in constant fear of her husband's abuse and thinking that suicide may be the only way out of the prison that was the marital home. "Escape from the Veil" evokes a shocking picture of everyday life in Saudi Arabia where the ill-treatment of women is the norm and where a corrupt legal system treats the rich very differently from the poor. The cultural breach that exists between the Arab and the Westerner is vividly demonstrated in this story of cross-cultural marriage. Sarah's story is not an isolated one and should be a warning to any woman considering a marriage of this type. Sarah Godsell was born in the UK in 1971 but her family moved to Hong Kong when she was just six weeks old. When aged 6 Sarah returned to England with her family for a couple of years but then relocated to Kuwait where she received most of her education. In 1988, after another brief spell in England and at the age of 16, Sarah and her family moved to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia where she lived happily with her parents on an ex-patriot compound where she had many friends of different nationalities. In spite of all the difficulties and prejudices, Sarah established her own business, a riding school for children before falling in love with and marrying a Saudi at the age of 19.
