Reviews

-An informative and enjoyable account of the literary family. Although the introduction is a bit dry, the rest of the book makes up for this flaw. The detailed time line is a valuable reference while piecing together the lives of this extraordinary family. Perhaps the most appealing aspect of this biography is the inclusion of portraits, photographs, and copies of documents such as birth certificates and diary entries. Likenesses of all of the family members are present, and there is even a watercolor that Emily painted of her beloved dog. Landscapes and representations of the family's homes and region help readers to understand the influences of locale on the authors. Experiences at boarding school, with illnesses, and with the death of their mother show the influences these events had on Branwell's writing and art. Charlotte's and Anne's own trials as governesses are also detailed. Pages are devoted to the imagery and the elements of gothic and supernatural that are present in their novels. Political dynamics, industry, education, and the position of women in society at the time are all made clear. A section on literary contemporaries discusses how the Bront's ranked among them. The book also offers commentary on the various film adaptations of this famous family's novels and recommends other biographies on them.
