Everyone has heard of a polar bear or a cheetah, but what about a white rhinoceros or a golden bamboo lemur? In Planet Zoo, Simon Barnes presents us with a challenging and moving account of 100 animals threatened by extinction and in need of human help. Each chapter presents us with the likely impact of the animalıs disappearance: how the planet itself ultimately depends on the creatures that inhabit it. Planet Zoo is also a celebration of the wonderful diversity of the animal world, introducing us to birds and beasts that few of us may be aware of but which are fighting for survival. Simone Barnesı narrative is captivating and passionate, while Alan Marksı exquisitely detailed watercolors make this a visual feast. An important book for anyone who cares about animal conservation, natural history, and the future of our planet.
Simon Barnes writes on wildlife and sports for The Times and for various conservation bodies. He spends a lot of time in Africa, and led the great Pearson's Cisticola Expedition to the Zambia-Zaire border. He lives in Suffolk with his wife, baby son, two horses and three cats. Alan Marks has illustrated many books for children including one on chimpanzees by Jane Goodall, and has also been involved with the World Wildlife Fund.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Alan Marks (illustrator). We all know that the tiger and the panda are in danger - but what about the numbat, the Malaysian tapir or the Kerry slug? They too may vanish, and they too have their part to play on Planet Zoo. In this passionate, personal book Simon Barnes presents us with 100 animals currently threatened by extinction and in need of human help to survive. By no means a catalogue of disaster, it tells us what can be done to save them, shows the knock-on effect of each animal's likely disappearance on its habitat and on the food chain, and emphasizes that for all those species that seem to be vanishing, new ones are constantly being discovered. Simon Barnes writes with infectious excitement about the wonders of wildlife, and brilliantly makes the connection between these diverse species. It is an inspiring, thought-provoking and entertaining book for anyone interested in natural history, and Alan Marks's spontaneous watercolours make it beautiful to look at too. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Seller Inventory # GOR004233691
