Prince Charles, current Prince of Wales and chair of the Royal Collection Trust, writes in the foreword that this is the largest and most varied exhibition yet assembled from the British royal collection. The National Museum and Gallery of Wales (in Cardiff) is the exhibition venue, and Evans, its assistant keeper of fine art, has prepared this beautiful catalog. Five princes of Wales originally collected the 250 items here, reunited from different royal residences. The exhibit begins with portraits and an elaborate suit of armor made for teenager Henry Frederick, who died in 1612 before becoming king. In the 18th century, Frederick Louis acquired Old Masters and commissioned ornate decorative arts, as did George IV, whose collecting continued into the 19th century. Edward VII included the new art of photography with his romantic-style paintings and sculptures. Prince Charles continues his predecessors' appreciation and sponsorship of various creative expressions, from modern art to garden furniture. Recommended to all art libraries for its interesting eclecticism.AAnne Marie Lane, American Heritage Ctr., Laramie, WY
