Edgar Munhall is Curator Emeritus at The Frick Collection, New YorkFrom Library Journal:
French artist Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805), mainly known for his portraits and genre paintings, also produced numerous drawings, many of which were studies for his oil paintings. This volume by Greuze expert Munhall accompanies an exhibition of the artist's drawings held this fall at the Frick Collection in New York (where Munhall is a curator) and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. The introductory essays by Munhall and Irina Novosselskaya, a curator at the Hermitage Museum in Russia, demonstrate the popularity of Greuze's drawings. The philosopher Denis Diderot praised Greuze's drawing skills as genius, and Catherine the Great and other collectors in Russia actively acquired his drawings. (In fact, after the collections in Paris, St. Petersburg holds the most significant collections of Greuze drawings.) Also included in this book are catalog entries on each drawing, which include information such as the significance of the work and its provenance. More than 100 beautiful full-color illustrations (and 250 black-and-white illustrations) accompany this original volume, making it a valuable contribution to Greuze scholarship. Recommended for museum libraries and academic art libraries that support programs in art history.
