Of all the actions fought on Indian's Northwest Frontier (today's Afghanistan and Pakistan), the campaign of 1897 was the most threatening to the British Empire. Barthorpe, an authority on the British Army and its uniforms, chronicles the year-long campaign to regain the Khyber Pass. His narrative is interspersed with numerous b&w photos. In June 1897 the ambush of a British-officered column by Madda Khel Waziris marked the outbreak of the greatest Indian frontier war ever fought by the British Raj. Goaded by their priests, nearly all of the Pathan tribes rose as one, across 200 miles of some of the worst campaigning country on earth. It would take eight months and more than 60 battalions supported by cavalry, artillery and engineers, to put down the great Pathan rising; and the enemy remained uncowed and deadly dangerous to the end. Michael Barthorp's fascinating account of the operations during the course of the Great Frontier War 1989-98 describes the soldiers who fought, their weapons and campaign histories, the defence of remote forts by handfuls of desperate defenders, bloody ambushes and grim, hard-fought retreats, killing marches and disease-ridden camps, the extremes of heat and cold, reckless frontal assaults, and the application of expert military skills by seasoned commanders, in terrain where only foot-sloggers and pack-mules could go. The Frontier Ablaze is a masterpiece of military history that is further enhanced by beautiful, full-color plates by Douglas N. Anderson. Highly recommended. -- Midwest Book Review
