Winner of the 2010 Minty Medico-Legal Society Prize: Best Healthcare Book for the General Reader! A childhood diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes can be devastating for the whole family. Parents and children both worry for the future and how diabetes will affect their lives. For parents these concerns can be compounded by not fully understanding what your child is really going through. Dr Rachel Besser, a pediatrician specializing in childhood diabetes, was herself diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was a child. Through her work with families affected by diabetes, she realized that many parents are desperate to understand how it feels to live with the condition, and wonder what they can do to make their child’s experience as positive and uncomplicated as possible. Combining her own experience with interviews with children and adults who share their stories, Dr Besser provides an illuminating insight into what it feels like to grow up with diabetes. Covers: The different phases of diagnosis and acceptance - Hypos, blood tests and injections - Food and eating - School and the teenage years - Family and friends - Life beyond home

I think the book is an inspiration to worried parents like myself and provides a great deal of comfort on how to address the many challenges facing a parent when raising a child with Type 1. It is much appreciated. --Howard Lack, whose son aged 11 was diagnosed at 9 years
I wish this book had been available when my son was diagnosed. Dr Besser presents a clear, accessible account of Type 1 diabetes from the child's point of view, which is why this is such an important book and such a marvellous resource for parents. What's more, she includes an array of children's views - after all no two cases are the same - and draws together the gems of wisdom in a sensible, reassuring fashion. This is a must for parents and children alike. --Dai Williams, Diabetes UK National Director, Wales, and whose son aged 19 was diagnosed at 13 years
I love this book! I cried and laughed out loud. If others, like me, regard the book Type 1 Diabetes in children, adolescents and young adults by Ragnar Hanas as their diabetes Bible, then this book should become their Book of Common Prayer. It is full of the everyday cares and concerns of all those in a family who are affected by diabetes, and offers practical suggestions on ways you can tackle even the most intimate of issues. --Jacqui Double, whose children aged 12 and 10 were diagnosed at 8 years and 18 months
