Frustrated by the failure of the peace process to end the occupation, and outraged by Ariel Sharon’s invasion of the Haram Al-Sharif in East Jerusalem, the Palestinian population of Israel and the Occupied Territories rose up in September 2000. The second Intifada has raged ever since. Here, a group of experts, many of them directly involved in the conflict, trace the course of the uprising, its consequences for the Palestinian people and the Israeli state, and its likely impact on the future of peace in the Middle East. The scholar Edward Said picks apart the fraudulence of the vaunted peace process; Noam Chomsky reveals how the US government has helped prevent a just resolution of the conflict; Amira Hass, Palestinian affairs correspondent for Ha’aretz, discusses the duplicitous methods of the Israeli media and government; Robert Fisk describes the genocidal legacy of Ariel Sharon and the Israeli occupation of Lebanon; and prizewinning novelist Ahdaf Soueif reports on her visit to Jerusalem at the height of the Intifada. Other contributors provide first-hand reports from the refugee camps and Palestinian schools, and from the front line of the Intifada. Photographs provide searing testimony to the costs and the indefatigability of the resistance. Maps illustrate the stranglehold Israel exerts over the Palestinian territories. The case for an international grassroots movement for Palestinian rights is made with persuasive clarity. The resonance of The New Intifada will help to build a platform for such a campaign and educate those who can be won to it. 30 b/w photographs. From Library Journal:
This is a timely story of the Al-Aqsa Intifada, the Palestinian uprising that began after the current Israeli prime minister's controversial visit to the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount in September 2000. Edited by Nation copy chief Carey, the book tells a compelling story of repression and resistance and of the triumphs and tragedies of ordinary Palestinians with extraordinary resolve to bring dignity to their daily lives. Contributors to this volume include distinguished activist academics, such as Edward Said and Noam Chomsky, as well as a number of other writers with a long history of either academic, journalistic, or activist involvement in Middle Eastern affairs, such as Robert Fisk, Sara Roy, and Azim Bishara. Although supportive of the plight of the Palestinians, the essays in this volume provide critical analyses of the Palestinian leadership and its tactics and strategies in the conflict. Vivid photographs and a very useful resource guide are also included. A balanced and up-to-date picture for today's world; highly recommended for academic and public libraries. Nader Entessar, Spring Hill Coll., Mobile, AL Psychology Cohn, Sanford J. & Barbara A. Kerr. Smart Boys: Talent, Manhood, and the Search for Meaning. Great Potential. 2001. c.368p. index. ISBN 0-910707-43-X. pap. $24. PSYCH ~ This practical and provocative book explores the phenomenon of youthful male giftedness. Both professors of psychology in education at Arizona State University, Cohn and Kerr (Smart Girls: A New Psychology of Girls, Women, and Giftedness) combine original research based on a follow-up study of an accelerated-learning class from St. Louis, MO, in 1969 with a literature review of previous studies to ground their conclusions about giftedness and masculinity. Discussions cover life-cycle issues and the impact of giftedness on the academic and social adjustment of such boys, including problems of underachievement and antisocial personality characteristics. In addition to analyzing gifted minority youth, the book offers inspiring suggestions for guiding and parenting gifted boys. Conveying a clear sense of the loss of potential demonstrated by the starkly conventional lives of the St. Louis children as adults, the authors tackle deficiencies in the educational system and broader societal issues that inhibit talented boys. Accessibly and clearly written, this wide-ranging book should enrich the understanding of parents, teachers, and mentors. Its gender specificity also allows for concrete analyses and specific suggestions. Recommended for public libraries and specialized education collections.
