From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1-Cooperation is the theme of these two barnyard stories. In the first book, the animals must work together to save the fieldmice's home from demolition by the combine harvester. When Mrs. Fieldmouse comes running for help, Tam, the dog, gathers a few friends. Forming a pyramid that's higher than the field of wheat, they alert Farmer George just in time. There are two minor problems: the text says, "he filled his flask with orange," leaving readers to wonder what happened to the rest of the sentence. Later, it reads, "the combine sliced a great swathe of corn"-hard to do in a wheat field. In the second title, Clarrie the chicken loses one of her chicks. With Farmer George's help, they search everywhere to no avail. Finally, in a conclusion that is sure to get some laughs, the missing chick is found under the farmer's hat, fast asleep on his head. The suspense in both titles is minimal yet effective. The animals talk among themselves but use only yaps and clucks to communicate with the understanding farmer. The watercolor illustrations are clear and appealing. Full-page farm scenes are interspersed with close-up vignettes of the barnyard denizens. At the back of each title, the artist has created black-and-white outlines of the characters for readers to trace and color-a fun hands-on extension of the stories.

From Publishers Weekly:

Portly, genial English country farmer George, clad in a tweed jacket with patched elbows, relies upon his barnyard companions in these stories of disaster avoided, the first two in a projected series. It may be his farm, but the animals clearly rule the roost. In the first book, Farmer George and Clarrie the hen ask everyone on the farm whether they've seen her missing chickAwho turns up on the farmer's head, under his hat. Ward's (Don't Worry, Grandpa) comic artwork contrasts the agitated fowl's dramatic gestures with the blank faces of all the animals who can't help, including a big, bland bull and the slightly buffoonish and cartoonish farmer. A mouse begs the animals to save her family's home in the second book. The animals form a tower in the path of Farmer George as he obliviously advances atop his combine harvester. When Farmer George spots them and investigates, he makes arrangements to protect the nestAwith a big spotted bow and a "home sweet home" sign. The last spreads offer black-and-white line drawings for readers to "trace and colour in," which may tempt young readers to apply crayon directly to the paper-over-board books. Youngsters may well wish to follow the further adventures of the endearing, slightly befuddled farmer. Ages 2-4. (Jan.)
