With Allied victory in North Africa imminent, 1st Special Air Force Regiment, founded by David Stirling, was replaced by an organization known as HQ Raiding forces. This HQ controlled the Special Boat Squadron (SBS) and what remained of 1st SAS Regiment.
The latter, now restyled Special Raiding Squadron, was commanded by Major Robert Blair Mayne, an Irishman, better known as Paddy to his soldiers.
'Paddy's Men' first flew into action in the invasion of Sicily in July 1943, landing near Syracuse as part of the leading elements of Eighth Army. This successful operation was followed by a further landing at Augusta.
When Eighth Army landed on mainland Italy in September 1943, the SRS came ashore at Bagnara to distract enemy forces from the main landing at Reggio. The Bagnara attack was followed by a deployment as part of a commando brigade to Termoli to assist Eighth Army operations on the Adriatic side of Italy.
Termoli was a major pitched battle in which the Squadron played its role effectively but suffered many casualties. It was also its last operation in the Mediterranean. The SRS was recalled to Britain for SAS operations in the invasion of France.
