Restraining and releasing bends are common, but enigmatic features of strike-slip fault systems occurring in all crustal environments and at regional to microscopic scales of observation. Regional-scale restraining bends are sites of mountain building, transpressional deformation and basement exhumation, whereas releasing bends are sites of topographic subsidence, transtensional deformation, basin sedimentation and possible volcanism and economic mineralization. Because restraining and releasing bends often occur as singular self-contained domains of complex deformation, they are appealing natural laboratories for Earth scientists to study fault processes, earthquake seismology, active faulting and sedimentation, fault and fluid-flow relationships, links between tectonics and topography, tectonic and erosional controls on exhumation, and tectonic geomorphology.
This volume addresses the tectonic complexity and diversity of strike-slip restraining and releasing bends with 18 contributions divided into four thematic sections: (1) a topical review of fault bends and their global distribution; (2) bends, sedimentary basins and earthquake hazards; (3) restraining bends, transpressional deformation and basement controls on development; (4) releasing bends, transtensional deformation and fluid flow.

Founded in 1807, the Geological Society of London is the oldest geological society in the world, and one of the largest publishers in the Earth sciences.
The Society publishes a wide range of high-quality peer-reviewed titles for academics and professionals working in the geosciences, and enjoys an enviable international reputation for the quality of its work.
The many areas in which we publish in include:
-Tectonics, structural geology and geodynamics
-Stratigraphy, sedimentology and paleontology
-Volcanology, magmatic studies and geochemistry
-History of geology
-Regional geology guides

The volume is not meant to be an all-inclusive reader. It is an excellent resource on the subject of strike-slip faulting, their settings, their characterization, and the relationship to restraining........
The references given at the end of each paper are extremely helpful and add significant value to the volume by allowing the reader to follow courses of inquiry that they have after assimilating the volume. Although the graphics were very good, overall the reader would have greatly benefited from the inclusion of a CD containing higher-resolution copies of the graphics with captions, which could be enlarged for better viewing. In general, I found the volume to be highly prized and instructive.
I found Tectonics of Strike-Slip Restraining and Releasing Bends to be highly informative and an excellent resource for references. I recommend that anyone remotely interested in structural geology, engineering geology, neotectonics, or seismic hazards should purchase the book, read it, and reread portions of it periodically as your interests warrant. --Robert Anderson, Alfred E.
