Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. In 1860 the Australian interior was unmapped and unknown to European settlers. When the Victorian Exploring Expedition tasked Robert O'Hara Burke, William John Wills and a party of nineteen men with crossing the country from South to North, this was soon to change. Following their slow and arduous journey from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria, John Van der Kiste gets to the heart of the expedition and the men involved. This book explores the way in which poor leadership skills, explosive characters and limited rations pushed the explorers to the limits of human capability. By 1861 the crossing had been declared a success, but only one man returned from the Gulf of Carpentaria. For the first time, William John Wills' short life is examined in its entirety. In doing so, Van der Kiste details the character and motivations behind the man whose meticulous diaries secured the Wills name for posterity. Now 150 years on, Wills' biography is a gripping tale of human endeavour. Seller Inventory # 007280

Soft cover. Condition: Good. 2nd Edition. Sandakan A Conspiracy of Silence By Lynette Ramsay Silver. Publisher: Sally Milner Publishing, 1998, 2nd edition. Good softback, some creasing, no inscriptions, minor marks. The story of the Sandakan prisoner of war camp during the closing years of World War II. Of the 1793 Australian and 641 British servicemen held in the North Borneo camp and its surrounds, only six Australians survived. The Australians and British in the camp were mostly those captured by the Japanese during the fall of Singapore. The book details their last days of freedom in Singapore, their captivity, transfer to North Borneo and the appalling conditions in the camp, where they were forced to labour, day and day out, while being provided with little food. The Allies were aware of the location of these prisoners and the conditions under which they were suffering. A plan was put together towards the end of the war to rescue them, as it was known that the Japanese were eliminating prisoners of war as they were forced to retreat. The rescue attempt was bungled through incompetence. Almost all of the men died because of mistakes and stupidity in the senior ranks of the services back in Australia. More than 1000 could have been saved. The records were hidden so that the mistake would not be revealed. Seller Inventory # ABE-1718513743316
