Over-all an excellent and neat. Many Australian fought and were captured in Italy during World War Two. A large number of these POWs escaped, some to neutral Switzerland, whilst others join the Italian Partisans in their struggle, first against Mussolini's fascist and then the German occupation forces. Most of these Australian depended for thier lives on the support and friendship of ordinary Italian people. Meanwhile, on the home front, Italian-born Australian were taken from their families, their farm and their businesses and interned in concentration camps, and Italian soldiers captured in north Africa were shipped to Australia where they provided much needed farm labour with the troops away a war. This imprisonment in Australia was also relieved for many by the compassion and goodwill of ordinary Australians. Bill Bunbury talks to men and women who lived through these extraordinary, little-known experiences. They tell of the fear, hardship and despair, the courage and the joys, and above all, of the wonderful friendship forged from Adversity. This book is based on Bill Bunbury's popular ABC social history radio programs. It is a lively, highly readable collection of historical snapshots, in both words and photographs.
