9781869402679: The Book of Iris: A Biography of Robin Hyde

This extraordinary biography of Robin Hyde (Iris Wilkinson) has been in the making for 40 years and fills a major gap in New Zealand's literary history. Gloria Rawlinson, a close friend of Iris Wilkinson's, did much of the research and completed a first draft before she died; Derek Challis, Wilkinson's son, has brought it to completion. It is a gripping and profoundly moving story about (as our reader says) a 'short, tumultuous, incredibly productive, sad and doomed life. It suggests comparison with both Mansfield and Frame...'. A dramatic and' densely packed narrative, including appalling accounts of hidden pregnancies, experience as a solo mother, dependence on drugs, intimate acquaintance with sexism and poverty, mental breakdown, and an extraordinary trip in China during the Sino-Japanese war.

Product Description:

This extraordinary biography of Robin Hyde (Iris Wilkinson), a prolific journalist, poet, and novelist, is a gripping and moving story of a short and doomed writer's life. It is a densely packed narrative that includes appalling accounts of hidden pregnancies, experience as a single mother, dependence on drugs, sexism, poverty, mental breakdown, deep friendships, and hurtful betrayals. Hyde is revealed as a feisty, witty, and courageous woman rather than the languid and sentimental adolescent who has often been laughed at by contemporary male writers.

About the Author:

Derek Challis is Iris Wilkinson's illegitimate son. He is a sailor, scientist, and the author of several books, including A Home in this World. He lives in Auckland, New Zealand.
